Why did my carrots turn black?

Jan 10, 2020

The smooth-skinned carrots you buy may have been sulphur-smelted.  Now someone is using sulfur to smoke carrots, this is to make the carrots look cleaner to attract buyers. Whether the carrot is smoked by sulfur can be judged according to the dryness and wetness of the carrot. Wet carrots are generally smoked by sulphur, and they seep out of the water and put them in the refrigerator for a few days and turn black.

According to experts, this kind of sulphur-foiled carrot is extremely harmful to the health of the human body. Because sulfur combines with oxygen to form sulphur oxide, it turns into sulfurous acid when it meets water, and it also produces other harmful substances. Will destroy vitamin B1, but also cause calcium to form insoluble substances, affecting the body's absorption of calcium. Moreover, free sulfurous acid is also irritating to human gastrointestinal tract. If industrial sulphur is used, serious poisoning may occur after consumption.
