OSU allows removal of thin winter tips or adjustment to a trellis height in some systems, but it warns against tipping desired red or yellow primocanes during active growth. When canes are exceptionally tall, choose a training system suited to their length instead of shortening every cane by an arbitrary percentage.
Removing spent canes promptly can improve access and take potentially diseased tissue out of the canopy. How to Cut Back Fall-Bearing Raspberries
One late-season crop: the simple mow-down system
For a fall-bearing cultivar managed only for its primocane crop, cut every cane just above ground level while the planting is dormant. A mower, sharp lopper or hedge trimmer may be suitable according to row size. University of Minnesota places the work in late fall or early spring during dormancy; OSU specifies late winter for its regional system. Before mowing, remove or raise trellis wire, drip lines, sensors and any other equipment that can catch in the machine.
The simplicity is real: there is no need to distinguish dozens of individual canes because all above-ground cane tissue is assigned to removal. New primocanes emerge in spring and carry the late crop. The trade-off is equally real: you give up the early crop that the lower sections of overwintered canes could have produced. This system often reduces hand-pruning work and creates a cleaner reset, but its harvest still depends on the cultivar reaching maturity before damaging autumn frost.
Two crops: selective tip and cane removal
For an everbearing planting managed for early and late crops, do not mow everything. Remove dead floricanes at the base. A reliable cultivar name lets you confirm fruiting habit and hardiness with a local extension or breeder source.
If the label is lost, watch where and when fruit appears. A crop only on older woody canes during the local summer suggests a floricane-bearing type. Fruit at the tops of fresh current-season canes in late summer or autumn points to primocane fruiting. A plant with two harvest windows may be everbearing under a two-crop system, or the patch may contain mixed cultivars. Keep a simple block map and tag observed canes rather than depending on memory.
When evidence remains unclear, make the reversible cut: remove unmistakably dead, damaged or diseased canes and leave healthy unidentified canes for one observation season.
