The European Parliament calls for reducing the use of synthetic fertilizers
Recently, the European Parliament’s Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety passed a resolution calling on the European Commission and EU member states to reduce the use of synthetic fertilizers, especially nitrogen fertilizers, as part of the EU’s common legal framework. The resolution will be voted on during the April plenary meeting of the European Parliament.
The European Parliament stated that the EU urgently needs to establish a legal framework to deal with different soil threats and promote restoration measures, which is essential for achieving the goals of the EU Green Agreement. Members of the European Parliament stated that the EU currently does not have a unified legal framework to protect the land of EU member states. Soil protection measures are still scattered and lack policy tools. In addition, the European Parliament pointed out that the implementation of relevant EU policies should pay special attention to soil issues, especially those related to agriculture, forestry, water and waste management, industrial emissions and international trade agreements. They also urged the European Commission to include measures to prevent and minimize soil compaction in the legal framework on soil.
