Peruvian Cherries Have Huge Export Potential And Are Expected To Seize The Chilean Market
Jan 03, 2025
Peru and Chile have similar crops. During the 2023/24 season, Chile exported cherries worth approximately $3 billion, of which 91% were sold to China. Peru has a warm climate and can export large quantities of cherries from December to January each year,
Sensonomic is a technology company focused on the agricultural sector. Recently, its Chief Scientific Officer Adam Formica proposed a vision for Peru's agricultural planning, believing that cherries have the potential to become the main pillar of Peru's agricultural future.
A major challenge facing cherry cultivation along the coast of Peru is that winter temperatures rarely drop below 7-8 degrees Celsius, making it difficult to meet the cooling requirements of cherry trees. But Adam believes that foreign investment in agricultural technology can help overcome this obstacle.
Taking blueberries as an example, they can now be produced in desert areas from Morocco to Peru. New varieties such as Eureka Sunrise, Sekoya Pop, and Magica have almost zero cooling requirements and can perform well even during El Ni ñ o events. Cherry orchard shade nets can help lower temperatures, and Chile has already put them into use. Peruvian cherries have enormous market potential by inducing flowering and ripening through the use of drugs.
Adam added that due to concerns about economic uncertainty, foreign investors seeking to transfer funds to agricultural assets may provide necessary investments for the Peruvian cherry industry, such as technology research and development and expansion of cherry orchards. History has shown that Peru can quickly adapt to changes and become one of the world's largest fruit exporting countries in just 10 years.
