Global fishery production is expected to reach 201 million tons in 2030

A new agricultural report from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) stated that world fish production (capture and aquaculture) in 2030 will increase by 12.8% over 2020, reaching 201 million tons, with an average annual growth rate of 1.2%. Russia will be the leader in the growth of catches: it will reach 600,000 tons in 10 years.

It is estimated that fish production in 2030 will increase by 33 million tons at an average annual rate of 2.1%.

The main contribution of the fishery industry in the next ten years will come from aquaculture. The output is expected to increase by 23%, reaching 103 million tons by 2030, with an annual growth rate of 2%, compared with the previous ten years (the annual growth rate is 52.7% and 4.0 %between).

There are many reasons for the slowdown in economic growth. The report explained that these include the increase in feed costs and the decline in productivity growth due to the introduction of stricter environmental standards in the producing countries, as well as the placement of new production facilities due to land competition.

China’s share of global aquaculture production is expected to drop from 57% in 2020 to 56% in 2030. The production of farmed seafood in other Asian countries is expected to increase significantly: India (24.7%), Indonesia (305%), Vietnam (20.4%) and Thailand (30%).

The global capture of aquatic biological resources will increase by 3.6% (0.4% per year) and will reach 97 million tons by 2030. This growth is largely driven by improved fisheries management and technological improvements to reduce emissions and waste.

The growth rate is expected to decline in most regions. Africa will continue to lead growth: 10.3%, fish production in Asia will increase by 2.4%, and in Europe 5.7%.

From a national perspective, the countries that are expected to increase fish catch the most during the forecast period are the Russian Federation (600,000 tons), Vietnam (500,000 tons), Indonesia and India (300,000 tons each), and the world’s largest producers China’s fishing volume could be reduced by 400,000 tons.

In 2020, the total amount of aquatic biological resources captured by Russia is about 5 million tons.
