Avocado Prices Have Gone Up Again!

Dec 06, 2024

According to Agraria, a Peruvian media outlet, as of the 33rd week of 2024, Peru exported 499000 tons of avocado worth 1.044 billion US dollars. Compared with the same period last year, the export volume decreased by 12%, but the export value increased by 11%. Fluctuante, a market information company, reported this situation, stating that the increase in export value was due to the rise in avocado prices, with an average avocado price of $2.16 per kilogram, a year-on-year increase of 31%. These results demonstrate the dynamic changes in the global avocado market, with reduced supply leading to an increase in international market prices, offsetting the decrease in export volume.
During this year's reporting period, Peruvian fresh avocados were sold to 35 overseas markets, with the Netherlands remaining its main export destination. The export volume of Peruvian avocados to the Netherlands is 160000 tons, accounting for 32% of its total export volume. Despite a 12% decrease compared to the same period last year, the export value to this destination has increased due to the rise in market prices.
Another important market is Spain, with an export volume of 101000 tons, accounting for 20% of the total export volume, maintaining its importance in the European market. Although the export volume to Spain has also decreased by 3%, the export value has also increased due to the rise in export unit prices. Ranked third is the United States, with an export volume of 67000 tons, accounting for 13% of the total export volume. Despite a 10% decrease in export volume, it remains one of Peru's main trading partners. Chile follows closely behind, accounting for 12% of the total export volume, and is the main export destination for Peruvian avocados in South America. Peru's estimated export volume to the Asian market is 51000 tons, a decrease of 32% compared to the same period last year.
It is worth noting that although the overall export volume has shrunk, the export value of almost all major markets has increased except for the UK. Although exports to the UK account for 7% of the total, the UK is the only market where both export volume and value have declined.
Among the major avocado export companies in Peru, Westfalia Fruit Per ú S.A.C The performance is impressive, consolidating its position as the country's main exporter with a market share of 6%, reaching 32000 tons. The second ranked company is Avocado Packing, with a 5% share and an export volume of 25000 tons. The company's avocado export value has decreased by 39%, and the export volume has decreased by 54%. The export volume of Agr í cola Cerro Prieto is also 25000 tons, accounting for 5% of the market share, continuing to expand its influence in important markets such as the United States and Europe. Among the top five avocado export companies, Camposol has an export volume of 22000 tons and Vir ú has an export volume of 18000 tons.
In terms of origin, Peru's fresh avocado exports mainly come from Lima, La Libertad, Ica, and Lambayec regions.
According to the ProHass Association of Avocado Producers and Exporters in Peru, the current avocado production season in Peru is coming to an end. In the past week, avocado prices have shown an upward trend because there are still stocks in Peru and Chile, and there are no more avocados available for export in the southern hemisphere. Colombia and South Africa have already entered the next season. As of August 26th, Peru's total export volume of avocados was 22178 containers, approximately 510000 tons, with only 1154 containers left for export
