Thai Durian Detected Carcinogens, Customs Today From Batch By Batch Inspection!

Jan 20, 2025

According to Thai media reports, the Thai Ministry of Agriculture held an emergency meeting to discuss measures to strengthen the control and inspection of durian and residues exported to China.

Thailand said that when Chinese market regulators conducted food safety checks on Thai durians exported to China, they found the use of a non-food coloring called "alkaline light yellow" (also known as auramine, oramine O).

According to the machine, alkaline light yellow is a yellow industrial dye, mainly used for dyeing hemp, paper, leather and so on. Basic light yellow by the World Health Organization (WHO) included in class 2B carcinogens, in 2008 China's Ministry of health listed it as a non-edible substance. Some durian factories use industrial dyes such as alkaline light yellow to stain the durian skin in order to make the skin look better.

The Thai media pointed out in the report that each batch of durian exported from Thailand to China must be accompanied by a test report of alkaline light yellow and heavy metal cadmium, and the above substances must not be detected before the PC certificate (product conformity certificate) can be issued. Starting from January 10, China will conduct spot checks on each shipment of goods at import checkpoints, and if excessive residues are found, imports will be suspended immediately. The Chinese side informed the Thai side of the news on January 8, and many places in Thailand have suspended the purchase of durian exports to China.

At the same time, domestic fruit industry practitioners confirmed that the customs required that from January 10, all imported durians (including Vietnam/Thailand) would be sampled per truck to detect "alkaline light yellow". The inspection rate of the test item shall reach 100%, and it shall not be removed during the test.
